6.7 Powerstroke Fuel System Failure and Contamination

The 6.7's common-rail system operates at extremely high pressure. Water, gasoline, debris or high-pressure pump damage can affect more than one component, so the scope cannot be determined from a single code.

What Can Cause This Problem?

Contaminated fuel

Water, incorrect fuel or debris can damage precision pump and injector surfaces.

High-pressure pump damage

Internal wear may release metal that travels through rails, lines and injectors.

Supply or control problem

A restriction, air entry, electrical fault or inaccurate pressure signal can create low-rail-pressure symptoms without widespread contamination.

How the Truck Should Be Tested

  1. 01

Take and document a fuel sample before disturbing the system.

  2. 02

Inspect filters and pressure-control components for water or metallic debris.

  3. 03

Compare low-side supply and commanded versus actual rail pressure.

  4. 04

Define which components were exposed before estimating repair scope.

Before You Buy Parts

Do not repeatedly crank a contaminated common-rail system. Circulating debris can increase the number of affected components.
