7.3 Powerstroke Cranks but Won't Start: What Gets Tested

A 7.3 needs enough cranking speed, correct signals, fuel supply and high-pressure oil to command injection. The order of testing changes depending on temperature, smoke from the exhaust and scan data during cranking.

What Can Cause This Problem?

Cranking speed or voltage

Weak batteries, cables or starter performance can prevent adequate injection even when the engine appears to crank.

High-pressure oil control

Oil level, IPR operation, ICP feedback, pump output and internal leakage influence injection pressure.

Cam signal or fuel delivery

A missing engine-speed signal, restricted supply or low fuel pressure can prevent firing.

How the Truck Should Be Tested

  1. 01

Test both batteries, cable drop and cranking speed.

  2. 02

Check RPM, ICP and IPR data during the no-start.

  3. 03

Verify fuel delivery and inspect for aeration or restriction.

  4. 04

Test glow-plug operation when the complaint is temperature dependent.

Before You Buy Parts

A cam sensor is one possible cause, not a universal fix. Scan and circuit evidence should support replacement.
