Why a 6.0 Powerstroke Won't Start When Hot

A 6.0 that starts cold but only cranks when hot is giving you a useful clue. As oil temperature rises, an internal high-pressure oil leak may open enough that injection control pressure cannot build to the level required for the injectors to fire.

What Can Cause This Problem?

High-pressure oil leak

Standpipes, dummy plugs, oil-rail seals and other leak points can lose more pressure as oil thins at operating temperature.

IPR or HPOP fault

The regulator may not control pressure correctly, or the pump may not supply enough volume under hot cranking conditions.

Sensor or electrical issue

ICP data, FICM voltage, cranking speed and synchronization still need verification because a familiar symptom is not proof of one failed part.

How the Truck Should Be Tested

  1. 01

Reproduce the failure at full operating temperature.

  2. 02

Watch ICP pressure, IPR command, FICM voltage, engine speed and synchronization during cranking.

  3. 03

If pressure cannot build, isolate the high-pressure oil system and test for leakage.

  4. 04

Verify hot restart after repair—not only a cold start in the bay.

Before You Buy Parts

Do not keep installing high-pressure oil parts based on forum lists. The leak must be located under the condition that causes the no-start.
