6.0 Powerstroke HPOP Failure Symptoms and Testing

The high-pressure oil pump supplies the pressure used to operate the 6.0's injectors. But low injection control pressure does not automatically prove the pump is bad—the system includes a regulator, sensor, rails, fittings and seals that can leak or misreport.

What Can Cause This Problem?

Pump output problem

Wear or damage can prevent the HPOP from producing the needed volume and pressure.

Downstream oil leak

A healthy pump may be unable to overcome leakage at branch tubes, fittings, standpipes, plugs or injector seals.

Control fault

IPR valve debris, wiring or inaccurate ICP feedback can create a pressure-control complaint.

How the Truck Should Be Tested

  1. 01

Check oil level, condition and base oil supply.

  2. 02

Compare desired pressure, actual ICP and IPR duty cycle while cranking.

  3. 03

Air-test the high-pressure system when data indicates a leak.

  4. 04

Confirm whether the pump, regulator or downstream sealing is responsible.

Before You Buy Parts

Replacing the HPOP without isolating a leak can leave the truck with the same no-start and a much larger bill.
